PERMATApintar School Holiday Camp | B. Malaysia

PERMATApintar School Holiday Camp is a programme that is designed to cater for the needs of gifted students in Malaysia. It is an enrichment and accelerated programme adapted from the Summer Camp Programme at the Centre for Talented Youth (CTY) – John Hopkins University. The camp is founded based on the National Philosophy of Education that aims to produce individuals who are intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, physically and socially balanced and harmonic through a holistic manner. This camp provides an opportunity for the gifted students to develop their potential which will further lead to lifelong learning. The objectives of this programme are to:

1. Develop students’ existing talents and abilities.
2. Sharpen students’ potential holistically.
3. Develop students’ skills.
4. Inculcate the value of lifelong learning

The camp is conducted during the school term break which usually falls in November and December. This 3-week programme is handled by instructors, teaching assistants and residential assistants who are specially trained by UKM instructors that have attended training at the Centre for Talented Youth, John Hopkins University. Throughout the camp, students will be exposed to academic and co-curricular activities that encompass sports, fine arts as well as spiritual activities and excursions.

Gifted students aged 9 to 15 from diverse races and socio-cultural backgrounds are selected to participate in this camp; reflecting the concept of One Malaysia as proposed by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato Seri Najib Tun Razak. These students must have passed the UKM1 and UKM2 screening test. The students will be attending one of the courses offered and the arrangement of the course is based on:

1. Students’ performance in UKM2
Notes: Students’ performance are evaluated from the aspects of Verbal Comprehension Index, Perceptual Reasoning Index : Math & Science, and Working & Processing Memory Index.

THE UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES OF PERMATApintar SCHOOL HOLIDAYS CAMP PROGRAMME

Throughout the programme, the administrators of Pusat PERMATApintar Negara will ensure that each student behaves accordingly to the matters below:

01. Code of Honour

Every gifted student should have the sense of respect, responsibility and trust. In pursuit of such community, each individual in the community should:
  • Do his/her best in all the academic activities.
  • Demonstrate tolerance and respect to all races, cultures, religions, genders, ages, abilities and state of birth.
  • Be friendly, cooperative, safe and responsible towards all the other members of the community.
  • Attend all lessons, meal gatherings, other activities and gatherings as fixed.
  • Be responsible for own actions.
  • Always cooperate with the management.
  • Obey all the rules laid down by the management.

02. Zero Indifference

Every individual in the community should work without being indifferent to each other. All members should be treated fairly, respectfully and friendly. This concept of zero indifference is in parallel with the three aims of Pusat PERMATApintar Negara:
  • Enhance the staff’s awareness towards students’ behavior that may cause interruptions to the learning process.
  • Allow staff (including teachers and administrators) to take any actions deemed appropriate (with reference to the rules) to terminate any bullying behaviours that can hinder the learning process.
  • Increase the awareness of all staff and students in order to communicate courteously without causing certain parties to feel neglected or alienated physically or emotionall.

03. Safe Learning Environment

Students should be provided with a learning environment that can make them feel safe and appreciated. Previous research shows that there is a positive relationship between sense of security and academic achievement for school students.
